StabiLifeTM Salts –
expanding the boundaries for lithium ion batteries

As the world continues to go "wireless" and the demand for clean fuel alternatives increases, advances in battery technology are providing important energy solutions. Lithium ion batteries, in particular, are seeing high growth in multiple portable power applications and are targeted to further enable hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology. To power these products, there is a major revolution in the batteries we know today . . . they must be manufactured at a larger scale, require longer-term storage life, need long operational life over a wide range of operating temperatures, and above all they need to be safe.

Anticipating the growing needs of the industry, Air Products has developed a family of new fluorinated electrolyte salts for functional electrolyte formulations used in advanced lithium ion batteries. We have been supplying fluorine chemistry solutions to the electronics industry for more than 30 years, and today can stake claim to the leadership position. Electronic manufacturers count on us to supply high purity fluorinated products for their production of semiconductors and displays. Air Products has applied this experience and unique understanding of fluorine chemistry to bring a new innovation to the Li ion battery market—electrolyte salts based on the poly-fluorinated borane cluster anions, [B12FxH12-x]2-.

StabiLife Salts have shown exciting potential when evaluated in both portable power and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications. Their extraordinary thermal and hydrolytic stability allows the use of safer, lower cost electrode materials such as LiMn2O4 and LiFePO4 in large format lithium-ion batteries, and significantly expands the operating temperature window of lithium ion batteries versus currently employed lithium electrolyte salts.

In addition to their ability to significantly improve lithium ion battery stability, StabiLife Salts possess unique electrochemistry which enables them to provide inherent overcharge protection to lithium ion batteries through redox shuttle chemistry. Our chemistry is tunable for the application based on the extent of fluorination (value of x above) and solvent formulation adjustments.

These high purity salts are produced at a newly-commissioned pilot plant facility housed within Air Products fluorine-based electronics chemicals complex in Hometown, PA. Experimental R&D samples are available under NDA.

Our application scientists welcome the opportunity to work with you to develop the optimal salt and solvent formulation for your lithium ion battery application. Call 1-800-345-3148 (outside U.S. and Canada 610-481-6799) or e-mail us at cheminfo@airproducts.com.
