It’s not always easy to connect a military occupational specialty to a civilian job. I started as 13B (field artillery cannon crewmember). There isn’t a lot of translatable experience between blowing stuff up and a normal civilian job. But as the years went on, I continued to find skills beyond my specialty that strengthened my experience.
From my enlisted days, I learned the importance of teamwork and to work problems up the chain of command. You do the best you can on your own within your section, but you’re always one part of a larger unit. As an officer, I see the bigger picture – off the gun – and how mutual individual success strengthens the section, the platoon, the battery and, ultimately, the Army. These lessons help me focus to do my best at Air Products and in the Guard.
I am thankful to Air Products for the opportunities I’ve had here and the continued support and flexibility needed to manage both of my careers!
