Air Products Korea Continues to Invest in Education for Pyeongtaek’s Youths
Supporting the communities where we operate is vital to our success. We believe good education can play a key role in the progress of the society, and therefore, we are committed to enhancing education to nurture youths who are the pillars of our future.
In Korea, as part of the Pyeongtaek District School Development Fund Agreement signed in 2017, we recently made donations to five schools in Pyeongtaek for establishing scholarships. The funding will enable these schools to develop a customized curriculum to provide local students with a more well-rounded and holistic education, which also includes students' creativity and personality development.
We have been contributing to Pyeongtaek’s sustainable development since our plant in the Jangdang Industrial Complex started operation in 2015. In addition to education, we will continue to identify other opportunities to improve the livelihood of the citizens through community outreach, charitable and other corporate activities.
Air Products China Wins Both Overall Community Care Award and Best Community Program Award for 2017 at 7th China Charity Festival
Air Products, a world-leading industrial gases company serving China for 30 years, has won the “2017 Overall Community Care Award” for its corporate citizenship and continued contributions to the community at the 7th China Charity Festival in Beijing. In addition, the company’s Liquid Nitrogen (LIN) Ambassador Program was named “The Best Community Program of 2017.”
The China Charity Festival is a non-profit event advocating philanthropic spirit and behavior of individuals and organizations, co-organized annually by over 30 Chinese mainstream media outlets since 2011 as a platform for in-depth dialogue and communication among various parties. Its judging panel, comprising leaders and experts from public welfare organizations, consulting firms, institutions and media, evaluates candidates and their projects according to the indicators of sustainability, creativity, adaptability, credibility and level of influence. While this year’s awards demonstrate further progress overall, Air Products has also received the” Best Social Responsibility Brand Award” for the last two years at the 5th and 6th China Charity Festivals.
Receiving these two awards in 2017 has special meaning for us as we celebrated our 30th anniversary of doing business in China. A huge recognition of our continued contributions as a responsible corporate citizen, the honors go to all our people and encourage us to keep driving for our higher purpose to enable a more sustainable community. We are also committed to persistently advocating and conducting community programs to support China’s social development. In the area of community outreach, Air Products has been actively driving the LIN Ambassador Program in China since 2013 by leveraging its global resources and local gas expertise. The program is an educational initiative to foster the next generation’s interest in science and innovation by demonstrating gas applications in daily life through LIN experiments. By 2017, more than 2,900 students and teachers in over 50 local schools in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Tangshan and Nanjing have participated and benefited. Air Products Helps 9,000 Youth LA Harbor
Air Products has been a long-time supporter of youth programs in many of our host communities. In 2017, the company received special recognition by the City of Los Angeles (California) for its dedication to the Boys and Girls Club of the LA Harbor. The contributions made by the Air Products Foundation helped serve nearly 9000 youth, between the ages of 5-19, at twelve locations in southern California.
The contribution reinforced Air Products' deep and genuine interest in Boys and Girls Club programs like the College Bound Pathway, which provides mentoring, daily tutoring, and preparation for ACT and SAT testing. Employees from Air Products’ Southern California locations eagerly embrace opportunities to foster education at inner city school districts, vocational and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) centers. As active members of our communities, we strive to encourage learning through experiments and projects, reinforced and supported by volunteers from local refineries and STEM related businesses.
Bringing Hope to Hospitalized Children
Hope and enthusiasm are a great source of energy. Happiness makes us feel better and helps overcome difficult situations. And that is exactly the belief of this initiative: Carburos Metálicos believes in the power of positivity and that is why this Social Corporate Responsibility initiative works to bring hope to long-term hospitalized children with serious illnesses.
Carburos Metálicos’ Hospital brand, Carburos Médica, with more than 70 years of experience in hospitals throughout the country as main gas supplier and technology partner, started ‘Nos Mueve La Ilusión’ in 2013. With this motto, we started promoting collaborative projects with foundations with whom we share our values and our aim and hope to better the quality of life of hospitalized children, focusing as well in the hospital staff, medical team and their families, who are key in providing support in the recovery process.
Medical teams have confirmed that hope brings a positive state of mind and has beneficial effects on the recovery when in a long-term treatment. Hope is a transforming strength that helps children overcome adversity, meaning a positive impulse of enthusiasm. For this reason, more and more doctors and health professionals promote accomplishing wishes and bringing in hope as part of the treatment. As if it were a prescription, we have brought hope through different actions.
World Skills Abu Dhabi
Air Products Middle East (APME) was a proud sponsor of the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi. The event which gathered young people from 59 member countries and regions, competing in 51 different skills, was the 44th edition of the competition and the largest event ever held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).
In 2017, Abu Dhabi was awarded the right to host the WorldSkills Competition at the WorldSkills General Assembly, making the United Arab Emirates the first country in the Middle East to host WorldSkills - a competition that takes place every two years in a different city around the world.
Not only did Air Products provide the gas for the competition skills; various business functions within APME took it in turns to promote the Air Products stand which included a 'Have a Go' booth for people who were interesting in learning how to weld. The purpose of which was to encourage and promote welding and engineering skills to a wide and varied audience in the Middle East which supports the country's objective of seeking to encourage the youth to look more towards vocational skills.
Air Products South Africa Supports the WitnessHappiness Project
Air Products people not only excel at their roles internally, but also make a positive and significant impact on the wider world. A year after Air Products South Africa embarked on a journey to make an impact at early childhood development centers (ECDs) in 10 communities where it operates, the vigorous improvement at the centers and the morale of children and teachers is “heart-warming”. The company committed to a national three-year project, WitnessHappiness, which launched July 2016 on Mandela Day.
The purpose of the project was to make a difference in the early education and lives of children in South Africa, as well as provide employees with a rewarding platform to make a positive impact in the communities where they live and work. By the second year of the project, Air Products had provided the ECDs with new equipment to facilitate the learning and development of children, enabling them to be fully prepared when they enroll at a primary school.
Air Products and its employees have a long tradition of philanthropy and volunteerism and this project was a focused extension of the company’s Sustainability values, to safely and responsibly care for each other, our communities, and the global environment. This guiding principle not only contributes to the success of Air Products, but also actively contributes to the fulfillment of our employees. Paddle for Charity: Air Products Singapore Team Supports Youths to Reach Potential
At Air Products, education has always been a priority in our committed efforts to help local communities build a brighter tomorrow. Air Products Singapore does this by focusing on the next generation. With this in mind, Air Products Singapore is proud to be a sponsor of the REACH Bursary cum Mentoring Programme 2017, which provides both financial and moral support to over 100 local students from low-income families.
REACH (Reaching Everyone for Active Citizenry @ home) is the lead agency in facilitating Whole-of-Government efforts to engage and connect with fellow citizens, on national and social issues. As one of their sponsors, Air Products Singapore donated USD 25,000 to the charity through the Air Products Foundation.
The Bursary cum Mentoring Programme has been run by REACH Community Services Society (RCSS) since 2009, an established charitable organization in Singapore. Donations from Air Products Foundation and other sponsors will go into the Bursary which enables students to afford an education and receive mentoring. The Bursary is awarded in two stages: the first payout is given before school starts to help the students purchase learning materials, while the second payout is made after the students complete a year-long tuition program with RCSS, which will monitor their progress.
In addition to making donations, Air Products Singapore contributed their time and talent to build ties with the children and help build their confidence through a series of fun activities, including participation in the annual fund-raising event ‘Paddle for Life’, a theme park day trip during the summer, and a day of service to carry out minor renovations at the homes of the beneficiaries.
Air Products’ Sustainability goals for 2020 include enhancing community outreach efforts with a theme of “Working here. Living here. Giving here.” By working with organizations like RCSS, we aim to improve the well-being of our neighbors, employees, and the world around us.
