News ReleaseAir Products Launches MAP Gas Selector

May 05, 2006 United Kingdom

Air Products, a leading supplier of gas based technologies to the food industry, has launched a new online map gas selector to assist food processors and retailers in developing high performance packaging solutions using Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP).

The MAP gas selector was launched at Foodex Meatex, at the NEC in Birmingham last week and will complement Air Products' existing Freshline® guide to MAP, which has gained recognition as an invaluable food packaging resource.

Since becoming popular in the 1940s and 50s, with the emergence of the ready-meal, Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is now recognised as one of the most effective methods to increase shelf-life of a wide range of fresh and processed food products, preserving quality and improving product presentation.

In order to develop the right food packaging solution, food processors and retailers need to consider a wide range of factors, including the food group and the type of machine and packaging being used, before deciding what kind of food grade gas or map gas mixture should be used to fulfil the required shelf-life.

In fact, the Freshline® MAP gas selector offers detailed information about the gas mixes needed to extend the shelf-life of 17 different categories of food, including raw and cooked meats and fish, ready meals, pasta, dairy and bakery products, fresh fruit and vegetables and liquid food and beverage products.

MAP packaging solutions involve the use of one or more of the gases found in normal atmospheric air - carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen. By using a single gas or mixture of gases, it is possible to extend the shelf-life of the product in a safe, reliable and hygienic way, while, in some instances, enhancing the product's overall appearance.

A new edition of Air Products' Freshline guide to MAP was published last year and can be used in conjunction with the online map gas selector to help food processors and retailers develop new packaging solutions for their products. The handbook contains up to date information on gases, films, map machines, map legislation and technology for the food packaging industry across Europe.

Once launched, registration for access to the portal can be obtained by visiting www.airproducts.co.uk/MAP and visitors can request a copy of the latest Freshline® guide. A handy swatch fact finder, containing information on the various food categories and the gases used to extend their shelf-life, is also available.

In addition to providing world class expertise in MAP technology, Air Products Freshline® range includes a wide range of technology-led solutions for the food processing industry, which are suitable for applications such as cooling, chilling, freezing and wastewater treatment.
