News ReleaseAir Products Researchers Receive Department of Energy Hydrogen Program Award

June 13, 2006 Lehigh Valley, Pa.

Air Products (NYSE: APD) research scientists Guido Pez and Alan Cooper were presented a United States Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrogen Program Award in May recognizing the development of innovative hydrogen storage materials.
DOE presented the award for the Air Products researchers' work on a "liquid-phase hydrogen carrier" with promising storage capacity. The technology has additional attractive features that have the potential to increase overall energy efficiency and reduce the cost of the hydrogen storage system in fuel cell vehicles.

"It is nice for our research team, including several additional Air Products employees, to be recognized by the DOE for this work. This storage technology allows hydrogen, normally a gas, to be stored and transported at normal temperatures in a liquid form like conventional fuels," said Pez, chief scientist, Corporate Science and Technology Center at Air Products.

"The DOE is to be commended for commissioning increased research on projects to enable alternative energy. Air Products' plan is to continue advancing the liquid carrier performance for commercial applications, including the engineering of systems to liberate the hydrogen at the point of use," said Cooper, senior principal research chemist at Air Products.

The research is being done in cooperation with DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under the President's Hydrogen Fuel Initiative. The focus of the work is the "Design and Development of New Carbon Based Sorbent Systems for Effective Containment of Hydrogen." Work on the developmental project will continue through 2008.
