Dalco Food BV, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of convenience foods, has optimised its cooling process with the installation of two Freshline® LIN-IS (Liquid Nitrogen Injection Solution) from Air Products. With an expanding product range, Dalco needed to speed up processing rates and ensure more accurate chilling. Air Products’ cryogenic systems have not only accelerated cooling and increased throughput, but have also ensured precise dosing of liquid nitrogen so products are at the ideal temperature for subsequent forming and packing.
Air Products installed two Freshline® LIN-IS systems: one was retrofitted onto an existing Haarslev blender and the other was positioned on a new Simo blender. They have replaced the slower, less accurate but common practice of adding frozen product to blenders to control mix temperatures. The liquid nitrogen is dosed by controlled weight and injected directly into the blending process, making cooling far quicker, more consistent and repeatable. Air Products’ nitrogen injectors do not rely on temperature or time control, and achieve immediate heat transfer. This reduces gas consumption and minimises nitrogen waste and ensures temperature control repeatability.
“We needed speed, flexibility and control from our new equipment and Air Products’ cryogenic systems deliver that,” comments Stefan van den Hanenberg, production manager at Dalco Food. “Demand is rising for our vegetarian products so we wanted to work with a partner that could keep our production as streamlined as possible while maintaining excellent product quality. Because the Freshline® LIN-IS automatically injects exactly the correct amount of liquid nitrogen, moisture loss is minimised and texture is perfected.”
A key part of the collaboration between Air Products and Dalco Food was the provision of a control panel, instruments and software, and facilitating communication with Dalco’s existing automated control systems. A thorough understanding of Dalco’s business and true solutions focus enabled this potentially difficult integration to take place quickly and with minimal impact on the customer’s business.
Ann Callens, Air Products’ European business development manager, Food and Cryogenics, adds “All our equipment is designed to customers’ individual specifications following a detailed review of their existing processes, requirements and factory layout. It isn’t simply a question of providing equipment: our work aims to provide genuine solutions and improvements to current or future processing challenges.”
Van den Hanenberg concludes, “Air Products has provided everything we needed and more. The Freshline® LIN-IS systems guarantee optimum conditions for forming and ensure a consistent, homogenous texture. They’re also safe, hygienic and simple to operate, clean and maintain.”
