Air Products has invested more than £7 million to upgrade and extend its services to the North Sea’s oil and gas industry, as part of its commitment to global supply and service.
Operating out of Aberdeen, Air Products has more than 35 years of expertise serving offshore industries in the North Sea, providing a wide range of packaged gases and equipment. The upgraded facility now offers specialist diving gases – such as Heliox and diving oxygen - in addition to a complete range of gases and gas mixtures for a variety of sub-sea engineering and other offshore applications.
According to Air Products, demand for diving gases in the North Sea is growing. Gary Homewood, Air Products’ Business Manager, Offshore Europe and Africa, said:
“Sustained investment in infrastructure improvements and exploration on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), backed by the government’s commitment to support the industry in increasing production from marginal oil fields, has led to increasing demand for quality diving gases.
“The North Sea oil and gas industry continues to develop despite the economic downturn and a recent dip in oil prices and experts have estimated that reserves containing upwards of 30 billion barrels of oil remain. The local industry is gaining recognition as a world class example of oil and gas engineering and supply chain excellence.
“Having extended our services and increased our capacity at Aberdeen, we are well-placed to support the industry as it continues to develop by providing a complete range of gas products and services that all come with globally-recognised assurances of quality and safety.”
As part of the upgrade of its Aberdeen facility, Air Products has a liquid helium storage container and two large compressor units capable of filling up to eight 64 cylinder quads (cylinder packs) of diving gas mixtures per day. The site can also produce up to 20 quads per day of nitrogen for use in a variety of leak detection, pressure-testing, purging and hydraulic systems applications, as well as welding gas mixtures
for use in offshore construction projects and specialty gases for use in laboratory analysis and calibration processes, to assist in oil and gas exploration. A comprehensive range of cylinder quads are provided, complete with bespoke carrying and fixing equipment, suitable for use on offshore platforms, rigs and vessels.
The investment at Aberdeen is part of Air Products move to establish its facility in the North Sea as a global centre of excellence, offering standardised gas products and services to meet the needs of the global offshore industry. As part of its integrated offering for the global offshore industry, the company operates four further facilities providing standardised gas product and supply services at Dubai in the Middle East, Brazil in South America and Singapore in the Far East.
Gary Homewood concludes:
“The North Sea is a mature marketplace, with an established offshore industry, including many of the world’s leading oil and gas companies as well as a host of highly-experienced operators. Where better to invest in a state-of-the-art supply facility, offering total gas solutions on a global basis, backed by the highest standards of service and quality.”
