Air Products (NYSE: APD) has received an Award of Merit from the WateReuse Association (WRA) for conserving 62 million gallons of drinking water annually by converting to recycled water for the cooling process at its Santa Clara, Calif., manufacturing facility. Nominated by the City of Santa Clara, the company is one of the largest among 550 customers connected to the South Bay Water Recycling recycled water line, which preserves valuable drinking water by distributing recycled water for nondrinking purposes, including industrial cooling processes.
The award was presented last week during the 25th Annual WateReuse Symposium at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. Each year, WRA recognizes projects that have advanced the acceptance of water reuse through education, sound science, and technology using reclamation, recycling, reuse, or desalination for the benefit of the public and the environment.
Across the United States and the world, communities are facing water supply challenges due to increasing demand, drought, depletion and contamination.
Air Products has set goals for reducing water consumption within its own operations and continues to identify ways to optimize water use—eliminating waste, increasing recycling and reuse, and finding opportunities to offset water withdrawals with supply from reclaimed sources. For more than 30 years, Air Products also has been providing its customers with solutions for treating water and wastewater. The company offers equipment and services—marketed under the Halia™ trade name—for a variety of applications, including wastewater disinfection for reuse purposes and drinking water treatment and purification.
