October 04, 2010 Teeside, England
Air Products will be hosting an exhibition about its plans for the Tees Valley Renewable Energy Facility, a 49MW power generation project to be located at the Reclamation Pond site (adjacent to the North Tees Chemical Complex) and now part of the New Energy and Technology Business Park, near Billingham, Teesside.
The exhibition, open to members of the public, will be held at Stockton City Learning Centre on Monday, 18th October (2.30pm – 8.00pm) and the Port Clarence Community Centre on Tuesday, 19th October (9.00am – 12.00noon).
The exhibition is an opportunity for local people to learn more about the proposed project, which was announced in July 2010, in advance of a planning application being submitted later this year to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
The proposed scheme, which requires approval from Stockton Council and an environmental permitting consent from the Environment Agency, will generate renewable electricity for up to 50,000 homes in the North East. It is anticipated that the scheme will create up to 50 permanent jobs and 500-700 jobs during its three-year construction period.
The renewable energy plant will use advanced gasification technology to convert pre-processed waste, sourced primarily from the North East, to baseload, renewable power. By diverting this waste away from landfill, the proposed plant will offer an environmentally-friendly solution for the production of renewable energy in the North East.
Since the project was announced this summer, the Air Products team has been carrying out a series of technical and environmental studies as well as consulting various organisations, such as Natural England and the Environment Agency, with regard to the proposed scheme. The company has also distributed an information leaflet about the project to more than 7,500 households and businesses in the area.
The two day exhibition is an opportunity for local residents and businesses to learn more about the project, the results of the studies and to meet members of the Air Products team.
Ian Williamson, European Hydrogen and Bio Energy Director at Air Products said: “We consider the Reclamation Pond site to be an ideal location for our renewable energy scheme and we are keen to hear people’s views before we finalise the planning application. The exhibition is also an opportunity for people to learn more about the environmental merits of our technology and how our scheme will benefit the local economy. The scheme will not only generate energy from waste but also give local firms the chance to be involved in the scheme’s construction and operation.”
The project has been welcomed by a number of local organisations including NEPIC, the North East Chamber of Commerce, Renew@CPI and Tees Valley Unlimited and it has received support from regional development agency One North East via the Tees Valley Industrial Programme.
Dr Stan Higgins, Chief Executive of NEPIC said: “I am delighted that the Air Products project is moving to the planning phase. The Tees Valley Renewable Energy Facility is exactly the type of long-term advanced technology investment we require on Teesside and one that NEPIC identified as being crucial in our strategy in which more biomass and waste is utilised to produce downstream materials as well as energy.”
Subject to planning approval and financing, the Air Products Tees Valley Renewable Energy Facility is targeted to enter commercial operation in early 2014.
