December 01, 2010 London, U.K.
Air Products today announced it is building a new facility to supply nitrogen to National Grid's Isle of Grain LNG terminal on the Isle of Grain, Kent. This facility will support National Grid’s Phase III development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at the site. E.ON, Iberdrola and Centrica will supply the LNG, and the nitrogen supplied by Air Products will help adjust the LNG quality to the appropriate UK natural gas specification. The facility is expected to be on stream in the winter of 2010/11.
This will be the third Air Products’ owned and operated nitrogen generation facility on the Isle of Grain. The earlier two came on stream in autumn 2005 to supply to Phase I of the LNG terminal, and in winter 2008 to supply to Phase II.
The new Air Products’ nitrogen facility will be used to help blend a further 5 million tonnes of natural gas per annum, bringing the total capacity at the National Grid terminal to 14.8 million tonnes of LNG per annum. This is the equivalent of 20% of Britain’s natural gas demand from this site.
Howard Castle-Smith, Air Products’ Vice President Tonnage Gases Europe, Middle East and Africa explains: “We are very proud to have won this new contract with National Grid, strengthening our successful relationship established since 2005. This is another key project for us to be involved in, as the UK's requirement for imported gas continues to increase as North Sea production has declined. Our proven track record in building energy efficient and reliable plants on time, coupled with our engineering excellence, gives us the confidence we are the right partner for these high integrity projects.”
Air Products announced in April 2007 that it had won a similar contract with Dragon LNG, in Wales, which, added to the projects at Isle of Grain equate to Air Products blending up to 30% of the UK’s demand for natural gas.
