Air Products' Fuelling Technology Can Be Used for a Variety of Hydrogen Powered Vehicles
May 23, 2012 London, UK
A hydrogen fuel cell car has been refuelled for the first time in London following a visit to Lea Interchange in Stratford.
The Hyundai ix35 FCEV called at the capital's only hydrogen fuelling station, run by Air Products, on Wednesday May 9.
The station serves zero emission hydrogen fuel cell buses that operate on route RV1 from Covent Garden and Tower Gateway and are part of the Mayor of London's drive to improve air quality in the capital. The station could also support privately-owned hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that need to fill up in the capital. The station is operated by Air Products.
Diana Raine, the company's European Business Manager Hydrogen Energy Systems, said: "This fuelling demonstrates that our hydrogen fuelling technology is extremely flexible, and can fuel the average family-sized car as well as buses, presenting a wealth of opportunities for the future of low carbon transport in London.
"Hydrogen vehicles emit no carbon emissions – only water – and offer significant environmental benefits, making them perfect urban vehicles." Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK, said: "The Hyundai ix35 FCEV showcases our commitment to developing sustainable and clean alternative fuels for use in future models and we are delighted to be the first passenger car manufacturer to utilise Air Products' hydrogen fuelling station at Stratford." The Lea Interchange station opened in 2010 to provide the infrastructure necessary to support and refuel Transport for London's fleet of hydrogen fuel-cell buses and small numbers of other hydrogen vehicles. The fuel cell buses on route RV1 are operated by First.
Talking about the actual fuelling experience David Yorke, Future Vehicle Technology Manager from First in London, said: "Being able to fuel the Hyundai car demonstrated the versatility and ease of using the Air Products fuelling station."
