Air Products (NYSE:APD), a leading global industrial gases and performance materials supplier, today announced it has recently signed an agreement with Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), the leading university in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, western China, to establish a scholarship program to nurture talent in cryogenic and welding engineering.
Under the agreement, the Air Products scholarships will be awarded to outstanding and innovative undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students in the School of Energy and Power Engineering, and the School of Materials Science and Engineering of XJTU, aiming to cultivate top talents in cryogenic and welding engineering to support the growth and development of air separation technologies and metal fabrications.
“XJTU is an outstanding university with strong engineering and R&D capabilities in Western China,” said Carrington Smith, Director of Technology Partnerships group at Air Products on the signing ceremony. “We believe our collaboration with XJTU will be mutually beneficial to the university and Air Products. Air Products will gain a valuable partner for local talent in XJTU as well as building relationships with faculty in strategically important areas for Air Products in China. We look forward to advancing this relationship with XJTU to the next level by using these initial activities as a catalyst to expand our partnership. ”
A seminar on technology transfer was organized on the day of the signing ceremony to give an overview of Air Products’ business and technology activities to XJTU students in cryogenic engineering and to share how U.S. based universities and large multinational companies perform technology transfer. In addition, Air Products donated English text books relating to advanced cryogenic and air separation unit technologies to XJTU as part of the activities.

Air Products recently announced the opening of its Xi’an office located in Hi-tech Zone to strengthen its presence in Western China. Through its collaboration with XJTU, the company is cultivating top talents in the region to support its increasing number of projects in China and rest of the world.
Besides the scholarship programs in XJTU, Air Products has also established other scholarships and collaborations with various leading universities in China, including Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zheiiang University, Tianjin University, East China University of Science & Technology, the Huazhong University of Science and Technology and South China University of Technology etc.
