New Projects Enhance Air Products' Position as European Market Leader in Hydrogen
September 03, 2012 London, UK
Air Products (NYSE: APD) has provided a SmartFuel hydrogen fuelling station to Shell Germany, contributing to the expansion of Germany's network of hydrogen fuelling stations. The station opened on 3rd August at Hamburg-Bramfeld, Germany, and is integrated into an existing Shell fuelling station located at Bramfelder Chaussee.
The SmartFuel fuelling station uses Air Products' state-of-the-art technology and is capable of providing 40 kg of hydrogen per day, enabling a fleet of 50 vehicles to be fuelled. The modular station can easily be extended depending on the demand.
The station is open 24 hours a day and the vehicles take only three minutes to fuel at a pressure of 700 bar, meaning they can fuel anytime and just as quickly as a conventional vehicle. The hydrogen used to power the vehicles is produced as a by-product of industrial process and brought to the site in a tanker.
Diana Raine, Air Products, European Business Manager Hydrogen Energy Systems said: "As a provider of world class technology, we aim to help build commercial infrastructures and Germany is a key area. With its dense industrial infrastructure and closely knit traffic network, it provides an ideal basis for hydrogen powered mobility. Thus we are very pleased to provide our state-of-the-art technology to the Shell fuelling station, adding another part to the network of fuelling stations to be built within the next years."
The SmartFuel hydrogen fuelling station in Germany is just one example of Air Products' European capability. Together with industry partners of the Clean Energy Partnership (www.cleanenergypartnership.de), Jörg Hömberg, Sales Manager Germany at Air Products, has signed a letter of intent (LoI) in Berlin, and the plan aims to extend the existing infrastructure up to 50 fuelling stations until 2015. The hydrogen stations are to be built in metropolitan regions and along corridors connecting these regions, thereby supporting the initial roll-out of fuel cell vehicles.
As well as recently also opening a fuelling station in Freiburg, as co-ordinators of the EU funded HyTEC project Air Products has just opened a new fuelling station at Heathrow airport to fuel a set of hydrogen taxis. In Spain, Air Products recently provided the hydrogen for the fuelling station in Barcelona, which powered the Honda FCX Clarity on its journey across the city on the 20th and 21st June. The journey was part of the International Conference 'Alternative Powertrain Systems' organized by the Sociedad de Técnicos de Automoción. Additionally, Air Products holds a leadership position in the fuelling of hydrogen submarines.
