For many years Air Products, the major global provider of industrial gases and associated technology, has been offering its expertise to the aircraft and aerospace industries in the fields of rocket and missile propulsion, environmental test chambers, autoclaves, pressurising and purging, laser testing, and welding and cutting... not forgetting thermal treatment and spraying. It is in this last area that Air Products has recently unveiled its exclusive "Thermal Spray Cooling Technology", a patented solution that enables users to continuously control the temperature of deposited coatings and substrates, using liquid nitrogen. By avoiding the use of sequential spraying previously used to cool parts, Air Products Thermal Spray Cooling process reduces time spent spraying from 15 to 30%, saving powder and process gases (it works as a closed-loop system, controlling the temperature set point of the substrate and the deposited coating). In addition to enhanced quality, increased productivity and longevity are also improved as the substrate is protected from oxidation, damage and is of uniform thickness, thanks to nitrogen inerting. Tracking is another benefit, with real-time data recording.

A proven technique takes flight with its first contract
In July 2011, Air Products' sales and marketing teams launched Thermal Spray Cooling technology to the French market, with the help of industry expert Mr. Thomas of CT Consulting. At this time, the Group came into contact with Metrasur Industrie, a company that specialises in surface treatment by thermal spray. This company, already well-established in the aeronautic sector, is focusing on innovation to distinguish itself from the competition.

After conclusive tests on samples and a lengthy configuration process, the Thermal Spray Cooling system is finally in place in this dynamic company's new HP-HVOF spray cab. This is a first in Europe and Airbus validated the system in a very strict audit in March 2013, showing that the efforts had paid off.

Encouraged by this first success, Metrasur is now continuing its validation campaign among its major project works and continues to amass orders with the support of Air Products, which supply the liquid nitrogen and oxygen gas and monitors their installation. "Metrasur is convinced that its development must take place collaboratively with partners; in 2006, the decision to manufacture leading edges was a success thanks to a partnership with Ratier-Figeac. The same strategy has been adopted in the advancement of the new thermal spraying methods by choosing Air Products" explains Hervé Larrieu, Director General of Metrasur SAS. He continues: "A desire to respect the environment, and make savings on production time and costs are the reasons behind Metrasur's collaboration with Air Products on Thermal Spray Cooling. This project is also supported by the Midi Pyrénées region and European funds."
