Part of Ongoing Efforts to Grow Talent Pool for Coal Gasification, Clean Energy and New Materials Markets

Air Products (NYSE: APD), a leading global supplier of industrial gases, performance materials, equipment and technology solutions, today announced it has awarded USD25,000, equivalent to RMB160,000 in scholarships to thirty students from three leading universities in East China, one of the country’s fastest-growing major economies with a large talent pool.
The scholarship presentation ceremony took place on April 15, concurrent with Air Products’ University Student Experience Day in its Asia Technology Center located in Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park. During the “Gas Science Inspires the Future” themed event, around forty participating students and teachers learned how innovation and leading-edge gas technologies and applications can contribute to building a better future especially on addressing environmental challenges by reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency and increasing productivity.

The university scholarship program is a part of our continuous investment to nurture talents and future leaders through education for the industry and community to help realize the China Dream,” said Saw Choon Seong, vice president and general manager, Asia Merchant Gases at Air Products.
So far this year, fifty university students in China have received Air Products Scholarships. Among them, thirty are pursuing bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and PhD at East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University in East China. They mainly major in Chemical Engineering, Resources & Environmental Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical and Energy, Materials Science & Engineering and Thermal Power Engineering. Launched in 2008, Air Products scholarships are granted to exceptional university students based on their overall performance, academic achievement, innovation and financial need. In the past six years, more than 330 students at nearly 10 leading universities across China have benefited from Air Products’ scholarships totaling over RMB 1.5 million.
Dr. Miao Ping, director of Air Products Asia Technology Center introduced air separation, oxy-fuel combustion, Ion Transport Membrane (ITM) Oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, purification, storage and applications, hydrogen generation and hydrogen fueling technologies that contribute to shaping and building a better tomorrow in the event. A career talk was hosted by Air Products as well.

Three of the scholarship recipients reported their research projects at the ceremony covering the cutting-edge topics of high-efficiency coal gasification, clean energy generation from electro-catalytic oxidation of ammonia, and new metal-organic framework material and its application in air separation etc. A student from the Resources and Environmental Department of East China University of Science and Technology expressed appreciation to Air Products before reporting her project, “Thanks to Air Products for granting the scholarships, sharing their advanced gas technologies and inspiring us to create a brighter future. The scholarships offer a financial incentive as well as important recognition for our hard work. I am most impressed by Air Products’ ‘Responsible Care’ to the community.”
