Exxon-Mobil, Jay Field, FL: Air Products Supplied Nitrogen Injection and Nitrogen Rejection Capabilities

Our world class nitrogen injection plants pumped 70 MMSCFD of nitrogen into the reservoir enabling the customer to recover an estimated 50 million barrels of oil over 25 years. As the field’s life cycle progressed and nitrogen began breaking through into the associated natural gas, Air Products served the customer with an 80 MMSCFD NRU that processed field gas containing between five and 80% nitrogen in the feed gas. The nitrogen plants and NRU each ran for over 25 years!

PEMEX, Jujo-Tecominoacan, Mexico: Dramatic Oil and Gas Production Increases Thanks to Nitrogen in Mexico

When faced with declining oil reserves and revenues, oil companies can consider nitrogen injection to increase their oil production. PEMEX selected Air Products and CryoInfra to supply a 90 MMSCFD nitrogen injection plant servicing the Jujo-Tecominoacan oil field in Mexico. In addition to generating its own power, the plant provides PEMEX Exploration and Production pure nitrogen gas at a pressure of 4,300 psig for enhanced oil and gas recovery. Since commencing operation in 2007, the nitrogen injection process has benefitted PEMEX by increasing their daily oil production more than 200% and natural gas production by more than 400%.


British Gas, Morecambe Bay, UK: Large NRU Keeps Natural Gas Pipeline Ready

British Gas / Hydrocarbon Resource Ltd, a subsidiary of Centrica plc, has produced from the South Morecambe field in north-west England since 1985. Exploitation of the North Morecambe field was a phased later development due to its naturally occurring high carbon dioxide and nitrogen contents. In 1992 British Gas contracted with Air Products for design and supply of a 290 MMSCFD NRU (two trains at 145 MMSCFD each). Natural gas from North Morecambe Bay contains 7-10% of naturally occurring nitrogen, with a maximum level of around 4% permitted in the UK Gas National Transmission System. Processing for full nitrogen removal in the 290 MMSCFD NRU complex thus permits the production of over 520 MMSCFD of on-specification sales gas. The plant has been operating continuously since commissioning in 1994 and is now dealing successfully with even higher nitrogen content feed gas from the Rivers Field, with over 1 TSCF of field reserve capacity still expected to be produced in the next 10–15 years.

Cliffside Refiners, TX: Turnkey Helium Enrichment and Nitrogen Rejection Unit Integration

Air Products understands that each gas producer has unique needs and we excel at providing gas processing plants to meet your specific need. In 2003, Air Products built the crude helium enrichment unit for Cliffside Refineries and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Texas. The facility processes 40 MMSCFD of a unique natural gas, containing 2-25 volume % helium, 20% nitrogen, with the balance methane and hydrocarbons. The plant can supply 15% of the world’s helium demand, and is often used to balance market demand and supply. The upgraded products from this plant—crude helium and natural gas for market—are valued at over $400,000 per day. The Crude Helium Enrichment Unit has crude helium recovery and nitrogen rejection equipment. According to the Bureau of Land Management Deputy Director when the unit was dedicated, Air Products built an “engineering marvel…that extended the productive life of Cliffside (Gas Field)...”
