Each year around Halloween, an event for underprivileged and special-needs children, called Suites-n-Treats, takes place at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. My first experience with Suites-n-Treats happened a few years ago, before I was an Air Products employee.

My wife and I attended with our first foster placement. When you consider the unique situations that a child with special needs faces—let alone one living in foster care or a group home—being able to attend an event tailored to them is truly a unique experience—for both the kids and adults who participate.

While attending the event, I spoke with the father of a girl all dressed up in a costume that incorporated her specialized wheelchair. I asked him how his evening was going. And with a very big smile he said, 'This event means so much to my daughter. It allows her to get out, trick or treat, and be like any other kid.'

Most times, we donate to a charity without ever seeing how our money is benefiting the individuals. That man's simple statement has stuck with me, and it put into perspective what community and volunteer programs really mean and how much of an impact you can make.

Many things have changed for me since that first Suites-n-Treats event. Now, I attend as the adoptive parent of two amazing kids, and I am an Air Products employee who is privileged to have the opportunity to affect the lives of hundreds of children each year.
