I Owe It All to Bob
I joined the company in 1978. Air Products was a reputable company, and I was very proud to have been hired to work there. I was also very young, and it was my first full-time job.
My first boss, Bob Glessman, was tough. But he was also fair, and I respected him tremendously. As I made mistakes, he gave me chances to learn and improve myself. He guided and taught me a business work ethic and values that I still live by.
Accounts Payable was a fast-paced, demanding department to work in. We were all held to high standards, and we worked hard. But everyone worked together, and we were proud of what we accomplished. Bob always let us know he was proud of us, too, and he rewarded us for our hard work and loyalty. We threw parties and held celebrations when we accomplished our goals. We were like a family.
Bob saw to it that we were a department of firsts. We pioneered a lot of new computer systems. And we were the first organization to pilot flexible work arrangements. We called ourselves a world-class organization. And we believed every word, because we knew Bob believed it. So did the outside world: Our Payables function was once awarded the coveted the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
I miss those days. Members of that Payables team who are still with Air Products have since moved on to other departments. But all these years later, we still agree that those days were truly the good, old days! And all because of Bob.
