NEW ADDITIVE PACKAGE NOW AVAILABLE FROM AIR PRODUCTS IMPROVES PERFORMANCE OF WATERBORNE MAINTENANCE COATINGS

ATLANTA, GA (October 27, 1993) -- Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. has introduced an additive package that significantly improves the performance of waterborne maintenance coatings. Through careful additive screening, Air Products' additive package--Surfynol® CT151 dispersant, Surfynol DF210 defoamer and Surfynol 104DPM or Surfynol 61 wetting agent--reduces internal and external microfoam by up to 90 percent, allowing gloss to be maintained during airless spray application and improving corrosion resistance. It is this concerted systems additives approach that allows the maximum reduction of microfoam in airless sprayapplied waterborne maintenance coatings. In addition, the multifunctional Surfynol surfactants also improve substrate wetting, suppress foam generation and promote a high pigment grind efficiency.

Microfoam is characterized as tiny micro bubbles entrapped on the surface (external microfoam) or in (internal microfoam) the dry coatings and is produced during airless spray application of paints. To the formulator the presence of external microfoam is significant because it can cause a serious reduction in gloss, while internal microfoam can cause a loss of corrosion resistance.

Air Products' application studies have shown that the combination of Surfynol CT-151 dispersant, Surfynol DF-210 defoamer and Surfynol1 04DPM surfactant or Surfynol 61 surfactant is the key to reducing microfoam in waterborne maintenance coatings. Surfynol 104 DPM (dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether) surfactant is recommended to eliminate other surface defects in sprayapplied coatings, orf ormulators can use Air Products' novel volatile wetting agent Surfynol 61 surfactant, which evaporates during drying of the paint film and leaves no residue to adversely influence coating properties. Surfynol CT151 surfactant, a low foaming dispersing agent provides for efficient particle size reduction in the resinbased grind during highspeed dispersion when used as part of this additives package.

Air Products' Surfynol surfactant additive package to reduce internal and external microfoam and enhance gloss is an example of the company's commitment to supplying the coatings industry with superior products, enabling customers to formulate low VOC systems with enhanced performance.

Furthermore, Air Products has launched its Coatings Initiative, a comprehensive research and technical program focusing on providing unique, high performance coatings technologies to the coatings industry. This is in addition to Air Products' already large role as a supplier of engineered raw materials for the coatings industry such as Surfynol surfactants, polymer emulsions, Airthane® prepolymers and epoxy curing agents.
