Award Demonstrates Company’s Practice of Open Innovation
LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. (June 27, 2007) – Air Products (NYSE: APD) has named Dr. Hong-Cai (Joe) Zhou, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the recipient of its third annual Faculty Excellence Award. The program recognizes outstanding, emerging faculty in technology areas strategic to the company’s long-term growth and carries with it a $30,000 unrestricted grant for Miami University to further Prof. Zhou’s research.
Dr. Hong-Cai (Joe) Zhou, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. | “Air Products is proud and pleased to recognize Dr. Zhou,” said Monty Alger, Air Products’ vice president and chief technology officer. “His research has broad strategic relevance to our industrial gas business. This recognition is not only part of Air Products’ overall objective to nurture external technology partnerships, but it also demonstrates the company’s practice of open innovation.”
Prof. Zhou has demonstrated outstanding creativity in the design of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials. For industrial gas separation―and possibly for hydrogen storage―MOFs are one of the most promising new classes of “designer” microporous materials to be developed in the past 20 years. A fascinating new possibility that has been realized is very sensitive control over pore size as a function of temperature, which may enable new gas separation processes. Prof. Zhou received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Texas A&M University in 2000. He subsequently worked as postdoctoral fellow in Harvards’ Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Many of the 16 members of Prof. Zhou’s research group are involved in developing new MOF materials.

Nominations were open globally to emerging faculty conducting research in areas of strategic interest to Air Products, such as energy.
