Compression

Where loads are applied in compression, the same principle applies as in tension; higher hardness will minimize the deflection or distortion of the material. In a comparison of the response of polyurethane elastomers and typical hydrocarbon rubbers to compressive stress, polyurethane elastomers responded favorably to compressive loading. This performance, together with their superior abrasion and cut resistance, contributes to polyurethane elastomer's excellent performance in such applications as caster wheels, truck tires, cutting and feed rolls, and metal-forming pads.

Test Procedure to Measure
Compression Deflection
ASTM Method D575
The compressive load in pounds per square inch of an initial cross-sectional area that is required to produce a stated percentage of elongation. Commonly used elongations are 5%, 10% and 25%.

Test Procedure to Measure
Compression Set
ASTM Method D395
The residual decrease in thickness of a test specimen measured 30 minutes after it has been removed from a suitable device in which it had been subjected for a definite period of time to compressive deformation under specified conditions of load applications and temperature.
