PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Trexlertown Fueling Station
Air Products, the leader in hydrogen fueling and infrastructure development, officially commissioned its new hydrogen fueling station and two hydrogen-powered buses as part of a Hydrogen Education Initiative. The Ford E-450 shuttle buses are based at Air Products and the nearby campus of Lehigh Valley Hospital. The fueling station is supplied with liquid hydrogen and contains Air Products state-of-the-art liquid compression technology. This technology is highly efficient, requires less foot-print than comparable gas compression technology and can compress seven to eight kilograms of hydrogen/minute.

The Hydrogen Education Initiative, funded largely by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), will be managed by the Da Vinci Science Center of Allentown, Pa. The program is to promote energy independence, a cleaner environment, and educate the public on the benefits of, and advancements in, developing a hydrogen economy. The FTA will use hydrogen research data gathered during the demonstration project to help guide future efforts across the nation. In addition to the hydrogen fuelling station at Air Products and the hydrogen-powered buses, the Da Vinci Science Center will produce a learning program to educate people about hydrogen's safe, clean, and effective use as a transportation fuel.

Penn State University
Air Products was chosen by the US Department of Energy to design and build a hydrogen and HCNG fuelling station, located at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA. The station uses Air Products' Series 300 fuelling technology, an integrated vehicle fueling system, that provides the compression, storage and dispensing of hydrogen and HCNG to buses and fuel cell vehicles. The hydrogen fueling facility at Penn State also has the ability to generate 100 kg per day of hydrogen via Air Products Hydrogen Generator. This fueling station has the ability to dispense 350 bar hydrogen, as well as providing blended hydrogen and compressed natural gas fuel. The objective of this project was to develop a comprehensive, turnkey, stand-alone hydrogen fueling station for HCNG Buses and Fuel Cell Vehicles with state-of-the-art technology that can be cost-competitive with current hydrocarbon fuels. Such a station will help to promote the advent of the hydrogen economy for buses, fleet vehicles, and ultimately personal vehicles.

Valley Transit Authority – San Jose
Air Products' new fuelling station technology, featuring faster-fill hydrogen fuelling advancements for fleet buses, provides hydrogen to two Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) buses in San Jose, California. The multi-year program will test the viability of zero-emissions bus (ZEB) technology.

The Air Products' fueling station, at VTA's Cerone Operating Division located at Zanker Road and State Route 237 in San Jose, marks a milestone in technological development regarding vehicle fuelling. The station features a dual cryogenic hydrogen compressor (CHC), which provides the fastest vehicle fill technology available today.

VTA is also working in collaboration with the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) on this program, which is being conducted to comply with the California Air Resources Board regulations adopted in February 2000 to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emitted by public transit buses. The Federal Transit Administration and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) will participate in evaluating the demonstration program.
