With respect to this area of focus, our primary support to our communities is through our match of employee contributions to United Ways across America and in Canada. In addition, we are interested in improving health education and understanding, especially as directed toward preventive health measures for children and families. We encourage social welfare programs which promote character building, physical well-being, and healthy choices among our youth.
Contributions are made to health and welfare organizations in communities where a significant number of company employees live and work. These organizations play a vital role in the well-being of our communities and their citizens.
Specific areas of interest considered for support include:
Youth Initiatives
Special consideration is given to organizations or programs that serve at-risk and inner-city children.
The United Way
Contributions are made to the United Way in communities where the company has a significant presence. The United Way provides operating funds for its member agencies. A federated yearly campaign can serve the community more efficiently by reducing the time and expense each member agency would incur in conducting its own fund drive.
Support for capital campaigns of United Way member agencies is also considered if these agencies have received United Way approval to conduct such a drive. However, requests for general operating funds from individual United Way members are not supported unless a special need not covered by United Way funding can be demonstrated or unless an Air Products employee volunteer is involved with the organization.
Hospitals
The company does not contribute to capital or other campaigns of hospitals or health-care related institutions.
Health and Welfare Organizations
The company will consider requests for charitable contributions from health and welfare organizations that are not participating members of the United Way. Some of these agencies are well-established and effective organizations deserving of support but have either national or local policies prohibiting their participation in the United Way. To be considered for support, these organizations must:
- Maintain a permanent local chapter or division in communities where a significant number of company employees live and work.
- Retain for local use and control a substantial percentage of the locally collected charitable contributions. National, regional, state, or local health and welfare organizations which do not maintain a local chapter or division in a company community will not be considered for support.
