The seventh of February saw eight representatives from Air Products sites across the north-west of England united in supporting science in education. An alliance has been forged with The Trinity Church of England High School in Manchester, enabling the inner-city school close to a number of our sites to launch a General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) in Science.
The course is open to students of all abilities but aims to raise the performance levels of those currently underachieving. It provides practical and contemporary research questions and helps students to emulate 'what scientists do.' The company was prompted to contribute following an appeal from Mike Hevey, a former pupil at the school who now works for Air Products at Crewe.
A commercial technology equipment manager, Mike Hevey, is delighted by the commitment and enthusiasm of colleagues within the company, "The opportunities available to students today are great but I strongly believe that it's the industry's responsibility to help foster an interest in science and technology." He continues, "The company recognizes the benefits of developing that interest early on and supporting educational initiatives such as this is a key part of our community relations strategy. These students are potentially our employees of the future".
Support from sites local to the school has been overwhelming. The commitment of representatives from Carrington, Clayton, Crewe and Walkden will help to sustain this significant community link and will ensure reciprocal benefit. Yet another example of Air Products employees going the extra mile to Deliver the Difference. (3/02)
