MSP Calls for More Focus on Hydrogen

November 2009) – Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) Rob Gibson asserted, "Wake up Scotland, the hydrogen economy is here for you now!”

Mr. Gibson hosted a reception in the Scottish Parliament for those attending a recent hydrogen conference, sponsored by Air Products, held in the Scottish capital. He acknowledged that the technology, the willpower and the backing of the Scottish Government were clearly in place, and that he was delighted to be supporting the project.

The conference, “Building a Sustainable Economy through Hydrogen and Renewable Energy,” was organized in partnership with CIFAL Findhorn, a UN-sponsored training centre based in Findhorn near Inverness, to help inform local agencies and create a positive approach to hydrogen in Scotland. It was attended by experts from around the world, including MSPs and parliamentary members.

Air Products was represented by Ian Williamson, Hydrogen and Bio Energy Systems Director, who presented a range of fuelling station and green hydrogen production options.

The Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association and The Royal Mail Group joined Air Products to launch an ambitious hydrogen transport programme—the “hydrogen corridor.”

The “hydrogen corridor” will be a highway that runs from Aberdeen to Inverness via Findhorn. The project will see a wide range of renewable energy solutions being used in different locations. Hydrogen refueling stations are planned to be placed at locations along the route to service a range of users, including public transport providers, local authority vehicles, Royal Mail vans and private car users.

Williamson noted, “It is an exciting time for hydrogen in Scotland and the UK in general. We are pleased to be able to be playing a role in designing this major project and look forward to seeing these plans becoming a reality.”
