More than the sum of its individual parts, the Process and Separations Center combines the capabilities of teams within five platforms to contribute via collaboration and communication across the Air Products' technology, engineering and operations communities. From the scale-up of new materials or processes, to troubleshooting of existing processes and plants, the PSC can be relied to add value to entire enterprise. Supporting all Air Products businesses segments, this "Engineering Arm" of the technology organization consists of the following platforms. Please look to learn more about our unique platform approach.
Combining expertise in cryogenic, adsorption and membrane based technologies; the Advanced Separations platform is at the forefront of innovation and development of new applications. These technologies are core to Air Products' competitive advantage. Pilot and demonstration facilities worldwide enable our Advanced Separations team to enhance the operations of existing sites, explore new applications, and develop next generation step out technology crucial to Air Products' leadership position in the separation of air and other gases.
Reaction Engineering
The Reaction Engineering platform consists of over 30 research engineers, chemists, and technicians, with over 300 years of combined experience in the development of chemical reaction process technologies. The group utilizes knowledge of reaction chemistry, catalysis, and process optimization to develop and implement capacity-generation and cost-reduction programs, to develop and scale up processes for new products, and to identify and develop new process technologies. The platform's core competencies include heterogeneous catalysis, process chemistry, electrochemistry, batch through continuous reactor design, multiphase reaction, heat and mass transfer, scale up, process economic evaluation, and process analytical.
Dedicated platform lab facilities include 4 RC1 reaction calorimeters, 2 four-vessel parallel reactor systems, 3 continuous operation fixed-bed reactors, and associated analytical equipment. Platform personnel also utilize the facilities of the Scale-Up platform on a regular basis. The expertise of the Reaction Engineering platform can be called upon to develop the most effective means of production in one of our production facilities located in 6 states (Louisiana, Wisconsin, Kansas, Kentucky, California and New Jersey) or 5 countries (UK, Singapore, Japan, China and the USA) in 3 continents.
Scale-Up and Pilot Plant Operations
From bench scale to plant scale, providing cross-functional alignment between engineering, new product development, product stewardship, manufacturing and business development, the Scale-Up and Pilot Plant Operations platform provides the conduit for development of new materials and new processes from concept to full-scale production. The group's expertise includes fluorination technologies, hydrogenation, new product synthesis, air separation, batch and continuous reactions, aminations and distillation. Developing partnerships with our colleagues from the Materials Research Center, Engineering, Global Operations and Commercial enables a steady pipeline of new offerings that are integral to Air Products' continued leadership position. The group consists of close to 45 engineers, chemists and technicians spread over 3 locations. The group also supplies technical support for customers at sites that are located in 10 states and 6 countries spanning 3 continents.
Process Data Technology
The Process Data Technology platform provides expertise in analyzing process data using empirical and fundamental modeling technologies. These technologies augment routine process monitoring and analysis. In addition, the resulting models are optimized directly to determine the most profitable operating conditions. The Process Data Analysis team meets a critical need of increasing productivity of existing assets with applications crossing both business and operations settings.
