A Shining Example of Creative Diversity At Air Products
The idea for an Air Products band began with an unusual article in Fortune magazine on corporate bands. Intrigued by the thought of forming a band at Air Products, now retired executive Joe Kaminski pursued the idea. "I felt that we had a tremendous wealth of talent at Air Products that we do not truly benefit from and an effort such as the band would be a small way to capture some of that talent." And so, in October 2000, Air Products' corporate band, "The Difference," was formed.
Almost immediately, the band became legendary when they were voted #1 Corporate Rock Band by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Over the next 13 years, the band played to audiences, large and small around the United States, raising more than $700,000 for various charities.
On September 8, 2013, The Difference played their final two shows to a sold out Musikfest Cafe in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This final event recognized the "difference" that the band has made to customers, communities and employees and recognized members Joe Hilgar, Ed McKendry, Jim Meyer, Sal Nicrone and soundman Terry Wetzel as well as paying tribute to the late, great Steve Eck and Barry Grow who sadly passed away during the band's 13-year run.
Will there be another corporate band at Air Products in the future? Only time will tell. But in any case, it will be hard to top the long-term performance of The Difference. Please enjoy this online tribute to The Difference.
