Air Products' (NYSE:APD) newest Louisiana hydrogen production plant is on-stream and was officially recognized in August with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Westlake facility. The facility, with a capacity in excess of 100 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), serves ConocoPhillips, the world's fifth largest global refiner, and other refining companies' growing requirements for hydrogen. In addition, the new facility is linked to Air Products' existing hydrogen pipeline network, extending it approximately 40 miles to Lake Charles.
"From groundbreaking to start up, the combined efforts of a lot of dedicated people have made this a safe and successful project," Air Products' vice president and general manager of Refining and Process Industries, Jeff Bryne, said at the event. "We're now supplying cost-effective hydrogen with this facility to nearby Louisiana refiners and other customers via pipeline to meet their growing needs, while building on our position as the world's leading third-party supplier of high-purity hydrogen. The hydrogen we make at this plant serves a very important environmental purpose by assisting our customers to produce clean transportation fuels from heavier sour crude feedstocks."
The multiple hydrogen supply arrangements from the Westlake startup are part of over 30 overall agreements with worldwide refiners that Air Products is currently serving or will serve via other in-process construction projects or contracts. "Meeting the high reliability needs of our customers has led to numerous long-term relationships within the refining industry," said Byrne. "The new pipeline extension at Westlake allows us to increase our reliability of supply even more to refiners in the area, and to our many other refining and chemical process customers located along the system."
Air Products has 12 plants in operation in Louisiana. Additionally, Air Products operates a 90-mile hydrogen supply pipeline network from Baton Rouge to Norco, La. Air Products also has a hydrogen pipeline in Louisiana, east of New Orleans, and nearly 150 miles of hydrogen pipeline reaching from Texas and the Houston Ship Channel to Lake Charles, La. serving over 40 refinery and process industry customers. Combined, Air Products has the most extensive hydrogen supply capabilities in the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Air Products will increase its Louisiana presence in 2005, having publicly announced plans in late July to build a 110 million standard-cubic-feet-per-day (MMSCFD) hydrogen production facility to primarily serve two refiners in the Convent area. The plant, which also will be connected to Air Products' Mississippi River corridor pipeline system, will be owned and operated by Air Products and is expected to be on-stream in November 2005.
The Westlake facility, a natural gas-based steam methane reformer, is the 19th built through the Air Products and Technip alliance. This alliance continues to provide the worldwide refining industry with competitive technology, plus world-class safety with "over the fence" hydrogen supply. Technip provides the design and construction expertise for steam reformers, while Air Products provides the gas separation technology. Air Products, through its extensive operating network, and Technip, from its large reference base, also bring effective operational and engineering knowledge to "design-in" high reliability and efficiency. The plants are operated and maintained by Air Products under long-term agreements with customers.
With a workforce of about 19,000 persons and annual revenues of about 5 billion euros, Technip ranks among the top five corporations worldwide in the field of oil, gas and petrochemical engineering, construction and services. Headquartered in Paris, the Group is listed in New York and Paris. The Group's main engineering and business centers are located in France, Italy, the United States, Germany, the UK, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, Brazil, Abu-Dhabi, China, India, Malaysia and Australia.
