Heartland Hydrogen Pipeline Project
We are planning to build a hydrogen pipeline from our existing facilities in Strathcona County that ends at the Williams Energy (Canada), Inc. facility south of Highway 643. The pipeline would serve the Alberta Industrial Heartland upgrader/refinery area and other industrial users in the region including the Sherritt metals processing facility near Fort Saskatchewan and the Shell Scotford facility.

Hydrogen is an important component for the oil sands industry because it adds value to produced bitumen and enables the production of cleaner burning transportation fuels. Hydrogen is a major feedstock needed for the upgrader infrastructure being built to process the growing supply of bitumen into synthetic crude oil for market. In the refinery process, hydrogen is used to remove impurities like sulphur from crude oil.

Approximately 95 percent of the proposed pipeline route would utilize existing pipeline and utility corridors to help reduce land use and environmental impacts. Establishing a local hydrogen network would enable us to meet both current and future hydrogen needs in the area, minimizing the need for future disturbances. Processing oil sands crude in Alberta also helps create more jobs, tax revenues and value-added products here.
