Commitment to Safety At Air Products, nothing is more important than safety. In fact, we are known for our operational excellence and commitment to safety and the environment. We safely deliver over one billion standard cubic feet of hydrogen to our customers around the world every day and have safely operated hydrogen pipelines for over 35 years. It's an accomplishment we are proud of, but one we never take for granted. It's why we design "safety first" pipeline systems to standards that often exceed regulatory requirements. Safety features of this proposed hydrogen pipeline will include:
- Welded joints that are X-rayed to be sure all welds are sound.
- Isolation valves that stop the flow of hydrogen to the pipeline in the unlikely event of a rupture in the line.
- The pipeline will be externally coated with advanced coatings and employ cathodic protection. Cathodic protection is a technology designed to protect pipelines from external corrosion.
- To help prevent accidents or third party damage by anyone unknowingly digging near the line, the pipeline will be identified with aboveground markers and will include warning tape buried above the pipeline.
- Extensive leak detection, monitoring, inspections and maintenance procedures will be carried out once the pipeline is operational.
- Even though a majority of this proposed pipeline will be installed in a Class 1 location, we are designing the pipeline, including wall thickness, to meet or exceed a more stringent Class 3 location standard as set out in the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z662.
