Proposed Route A proposed route for the Heartland Hydrogen Pipeline Project has been established through initial land survey and other field work to minimize potential environmental and land impacts and help determine the best path for the pipeline. Approximately 95 percent of the route will parallel existing infrastructure that includes pipeline rights-of-way and utility corridors. A final route will be defined through public consultation, field studies information and the regulatory approval process.

In January 2008, Air Products notified stakeholders about its plans to build a pipeline to provide hydrogen to upgraders, refineries and chemical processors in the Alberta Industrial Heartland area northeast of Edmonton. Hydrogen is a major feedstock for bitumen upgrading and refining and enables the production of cleaner burning transportation fuels.
The proposed pipeline is approximately 49 kilometres long, starting at our existing facilities in the “refinery row” area of Strathcona County outside Edmonton and ending just south of Highway 643 at the Williams Energy (Canada) Inc. facility, with lateral pipeline connections to Sherritt Metals and Shell Canada’s Scotford Upgrader near Fort Saskatchewan (see enclosed map). Establishing this local hydrogen network will enable us to meet both current and future hydrogen needs in the area and minimize the need for future disturbances.
Project Timeline Pending regulatory approval, right of way preparation and pipeline construction is now expected to begin sometime in October or November 2009 for a planned in-service date of February or March 2010.
