Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC)

Using the optimum specialty gas and equipment when performing Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) will greatly improve the accuracy of your results.

SFC is often used to analyse low concentrations of compounds and high molecular weight molecules. It is commonly used in pharmaceutical drug analysis, as well as in the analysis of food, explosives, petroleum, polymers and propellants.

SFC is similar to gas chromatography and liquid chromatography, but uses liquid Carbon Dioxide as the mobile phase so the flow path is highly pressurized. Since SFC is often used to analyse low concentrations of compounds, the purity of the CO2 is important. SFC can utilise a variety of detector methods including Flame Ionization Detector, Flame Photometric Detector, Electron Capture Detector and Mass Spectrometer, so the correct detector gas is also required (please see Gas Chromatography for information on the gases required for various detectors).
