Hydrogen production using steam reforming is highly endothermic, requiring a catalytic process reaction at high temperatures and significant steam input. The overall efficiency of the process can be improved through the integration of power generation using gas and steam turbine technology. Power may be generated from this process on an incremental basis at a heat-rate of less than 5500 Btu/kWh. Frequently, the need for additional power goes hand in hand with the need for more steam and HyCO products at a chemical plant or refinery. Air Products has developed and installed multiple such integrated facilities, which it owns and operates.
