Specialty Additives Update

February 2014

Air Products can help make your switch to "NPE-free" formulations easier

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are surfactants used in a wide variety of applications such as detergents, inks, adhesives, cosmetics, metalworking fluids, paints, coatings and other industrial specialties. However, regulations are continuously advancing in the U.S. and Europe to limit the use of NPEs because they are highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Plus, in the environment, they degrade to the more environmentally persistent nonylphenol (NP). NP is considered to be an endocrine disruptor because of its ability to mimic estrogen.

Air Products has developed many products that can match or exceed the cost-effective performance of even specialty NPE-containing products. We have a variety of options available to help you stay ahead of changing regulations and reformulation hurdles. We offer a full range of surfactants, dispersants and wetting agents with no added NPEs. A few of our newer products highlighted below can offer the additional solutions you need to develop your NPE-free formulations.

Spec Add Update Feb 2014 Carbowet® GA series surfactants—Surfactants that are optimized to provide improved milling efficiency. Functioning through dynamic wetting and a form of dynamic stabilization, these products are used to overcome deficiencies in the dispersant or grind resin and can improve hiding power, as well as provide higher gloss, greater color and faster color development.
Spec Add Update Feb 2014 ZetaSperse® 100 series dispersants—Specifically designed for the hurdles of optimizing resin-containing dispersions. These dispersants can provide steric stabilization characteristics to the largely ionic resins to provide performance synergies—often with lower dispersion viscosities, improved stability and greater resistance to letdown shock and other incompatibilities.
Spec Add Update Feb 2014 Dynol™ superwetter surfactants—Specialty surfactants that can remarkably lower dynamic surface tension. Along with Dynol® 360 superwetting surfactant, we offer a variety of products, including silicone-free products, some of which can improve coalescence, as well as siloxane-based products that can improve flow and leveling.

Remember, replacing NPE surfactants with environmentally preferable alternatives doesn’t have to be a hassle. You can maintain formulation performance, minimize reformulation time and effort, and keep your formulation costs under control with additives from Air Products. The ingredients are here today that can help you meet the regulations of tomorrow. Stay one step ahead with Air Products.
