Surfynol Surfactants and Airase Defoamers:
Improve wetting and control foam in water-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs)

Coating water-based PSAs onto hydrophobic substrates requires a surfactant that provides excellent dynamic surface tension reduction to obtain intimate contact and wetting of the PSA to the release liner. Reverse gravure applications can magnify defects such as de-wetting, retraction and cratering. One product is designed to provide excellent dynamic surface tension reduction and promote a defect-free coating is Surfynol PSA-336 surfactant. It can improve wetting on release liners, reduce foam generation, and typically does not gel during dilution. These attributes, in addition to its compliance with several FDA regulations, make it an ideal choice for waterborne PSA and flexible packaging adhesives.

For filmic label adhesives and other applications where zero foam and no water sensitivity are required, Surfynol 440 surfactant is a product of choice. Surfynol 440 surfactant can provide low-foam dynamic and equilibrium surface tension reduction with excellent incorporation into waterborne adhesive formulations. Like Surfynol PSA-336 surfactant, Surfynol 440 surfactant complies with applicable FDA regulations making it the ideal surfactant for packaging applications.

New! Airase 4500 defoamer is a proprietary organic oil defoamer designed to control and typically eliminate foam, pinholes and entrapped air in waterbased adhesives without generating surface defects. Airase 4500 defoamer does not contain mineral oils, hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) or alky phenol ethoxylates (APEs). Airase 4500 defoamer is especially suited for applications requiring: US FDA 21CFR 175.105; 175.125(b)*; 175.300**; and 176.170**, 176.180**, 176.200**, and 176.210 making it an ideal defoamer for adhesive and packaging applications.

* The use of Airase 4500 defoamer in compliance with 21CFR175.125(b) is restricted to a maximum use level of 0.5% of Airase 4500 defoamer in the pressure-sensitive adhesive formulation.
** The use of Airase 4500 defoamer in compliance with 21CFR175.300, 21CFR176.170, 21CFR186.180 and 21CFR176.200 is restricted to a maximum application rate of 16.5 milligrams of Airase 4500 defoamer per 1000 square inches of coating.
