For patients with chronic respiratory conditions for example, Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure systems have been used successfully. The system increases patient ventilation by supplying pressurised air through a mask – increasing pressure on inhaling and reducing it when exhaling.
There are three levels of ventilation therapy:
acute
sub-acute
chronic
Bi-level systems are designed for long term use within the home, but portable systems can also be used for transport, short term and institutional purposes. In some cases the system can also be used with oxygen-enriched air.
A range of equipment is available providing support for patients wherever they are - in Accident and Emergency, respiratory wards or in the home.
