From February 2006, the home oxygen service in England and Wales is changing.
The changes follow careful consultation and planning - by the Department of Health (DOH)
and National Assembly of Wales (NAW) - to improve the service oxygen patients receive.
It was recognised that the existing home oxygen service may not allow every patient
to have access to the most suitable equipment for their needs.
As a result of their consultation with stakeholders, including patients, clinicians and
suppliers, the DOH and NAW have redesigned the service to ensure that the most appropriate
form of oxygen therapy is supplied to meet the specific needs of each patient.
Under the new service, England and Wales is divided into 11 regions. The oxygen service
in each region will be provided by a single supplier who will provide all forms of oxygen -
from lightweight portable cylinders to concentrators - to patients in their homes.
