Challenge? Merl Says, Bring It On.

Over the last 50 years he's hauled it all, from groceries to steel. Meet Merl McCullough, one of our liquid hydrogen drivers.

Compared to some of our other gas products, liquid hydrogen is produced at only a few strategic production sites across North America. As a result, Merl spends a lot of time in his truck. Liquid hydrogen driving teams run 24 hours a day, beginning the workweek Sunday afternoons and ending sometime around noon on Fridays. All that time on the road has taught Merl to keep things in perspective.

Take challenge, for example. Many shrink in the face of a demanding situation. Not Merl.

"I don't have any challenges any more," he says. "I just go out there like a bulldog and do my job."

Merl's tenacious and unflappable manner is the perfect match for, dare we say, the challenging job of safely maneuvering a 60-foot, 80,000 pound vehicle along the nation's congested highways. No doubt his attitude has a lot to do with past safety achievements—a few years ago he completed 2 million miles without a preventable accident—and why he's well on the way to achieving 3 million safe driving miles.

Of course, Merl sometimes complains about the "baloney," traffic that seems to get worse all the time and motorists who display little concern for their own or others' safety. But at a time in life when most men have already chosen retirement, Merl is still out there, riding high.

"I work for the enjoyment of working," he says.
