Micro-Contaminants and Recalcitrant Compounds

There is a growing awareness and desire to remove new and emerging chemical contaminants such as endocrine disruptors, industrial solvents, petroleum additives, etc. from drinking water—and even from wastewater—prior to reusing it for applications such as irrigation and aquifer recharging. These chemicals are typically difficult to treat in a cost-effective manner and require very aggressive oxidants, such as a combination of ozone and hydrogen peroxide that forms the hydroxyl radical. The hydroxyl radical is created by an advanced oxidation process (AOP).

For ozone plus hydrogen peroxide AOP, Air Products has licensed patented HiPOx™ technology from Applied Process Technologies, Inc. The HiPOx system utilizes a patented plugflow reactor design which employs multiple reagent injection points and mixers. This reactor configuration maximizes contaminant destruction in a waste-free process with minimum in-process inventory and a space-efficient footprint.

The HiPOx technology is well suited to remove:
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as 1,4-Dioxane, PCE (tetrachloroethylene) and TCE (trichloroethylene)
  • Petroleum compounds such as MTBE (Methyl tertiary-butyl ether), BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes), TBA (t-butyl alcohol) and TAME (t-amylmethyl ether)
  • Taste and odor causing compounds (MIB and Geosmin)
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Micro-contaminants such as endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs)
  • And various other chemical contaminants
