Undesirable taste and odor (T&O) issues in drinking water are a major source of customer complaints for water utilities. Ozone has been used successfully to treat T&O in many existing treatment facilities. However, there is a better treatment approach with advanced oxidation process (AOP), and in particular with ozone plus peroxide and the HiPOx™ technology.
Air Products is working with municipalities to address the T&O problem more effectively with the patented HiPOx technology. The HiPOx technology is an ozone and hydrogen peroxide AOP system with a uniquely designed reactor. This technology has been shown to treat the T&O causing compounds (Geosmin and MIB) more effectively than other competing technologies such as powdered activated carbon (PAC), ozone alone or chlorine. The real benefit comes from the reactor design. Advantages of using the HiPOx reactor for taste and odor control:
- Performs multiple treatment objectives simultaneously such as taste/odor/color and VOC removal without forming disinfection byproducts
- Destroys recalcitrant chemicals to non-detect levels
- Uniquely minimizes and controls bromate formation to help meet strict drinking water standards
